The differences between a cell phone and a touch tablet

Gadgets are all over the place today and considering that, honestly, many of them look the same, it’s so hard to differentiate between a certain type of gadget and another. Say, a cell phone and a touch tablet. As many cell phones these days have touch screens and hardly any physical buttons left, they look more and more like tablets and vice versa. Of course, these devices are quite different in purpose and maneuverability, but they also have common features, most of them having to do with user interface and multimedia content. So if you want to buy a new cell phone, you might actually be better off buying a tablet instead. Or, alternatively, you might be better off buying a cell phone, as it has all the features you need, even if you thought that a tablet is the way to go.

Design and size: the average display size for a cell phone is around 3.5-4 inches, while tablets are usually 7 inches or bigger. Thus, it’s much easier to handle a cell phone than a tablet- it will be easier to move them in or out of a bag or your pocket, will be considerably lighter and can be handled with one hand, while tablets usually require both. Depending on the manufacturer, cell phones can have top notch build quality or more modest features, but most of the times cell phones are made out of plastic. Sometimes it’s good plastic and the small form factor doesn’t require for much more. Tablets, on the other hand, come with metal and even rubber covers sometimes, and generally feel more solid than smart phones.

Software: Many times, tablets and cell phones run slightly different versions of the same operating systems. New cell phones can run on Android, Windows and iOS, while tablets run on the same operating systems, but custom tailored to look and perform better on different screen sizes. Apps for emails, photos, browsers, games, are kind of similar on the two platforms, although the extra space on a tablet can allow for some more complex programs and interface.

Hardware: Most tablets can’t be used directly for making phone calls, as it doesn’t pack a GSM module or a SIM slot. You would have to make calls over the internet, using Skype or a similar service. On the other hand, cell phones might not be as strong when it comes to decoding video, running games and apps as tablets are. Tablets have strong, mostly dual core processors, that can run a browser and an HD video at the same time, something a small cell phone, even a new one, can’t do.

Battery life: Considering they have smaller screens and less demanding hardware, cell phones can run on a single charge for more time than a tablet can. There are some tablets, especially those running on Windows, that can remain without power in just a few hours, while even the more modest cell phones, as long as they are new, can go on a single charge for a couple of days straight and as many as 6 to 10 hours of actual conversation.

Price: Most of the time, tablets are more expensive than cell phones, although high end models, like the iPhone, the Google Nexus or Samsung Galaxy II can cost as much as a tablet. Still, most cell phones are much more affordable than tablets, considering the manufacturing costs are lower.
